Who will be your guide

Hello. It's a pleasure to meet you. I will be your guide into the world of ballet art and grace. I worked at the Odesa Opera House as a classical ballet artist of the first category (solo). Before the war, I also had a small Private ballet school in Ukraine. My first degree is in ballet and classical dance teaching, but I also hold a PhD in Psychology. My psychological research was related to choreography and creative thinking. I am delighted to meet you and to contribute to the creative development of Derbyshire.

What does a ballet class consist of
  • Ballet barre: is fundamental to a dancer's training. It builds strength, balance, and precision, laying the foundation for all movements in ballet. Through repetitive exercises, dancers develop proper posture, muscle memory, and the grace required for more advanced techniques (Beginner)

  • Dance: the practice of the world-famous classical repertoire and beyond (from beginners to advanced)

  • Port De bra: This officially means ‘movement of the arms’ but it is usually a general warm up using the whole body, focusing on finding your balance (Beginner)

  • Centre practice: This often involves learning how to transfer your weight, key focal and linking steps and potentially pirouettes (Beginner)

  • Floor-barre: consists of exercises based on Ballet steps performed lying and sitting on the floor. It's an ideal way to prepare and maintain the body for Ballet - strengthening, lengthening and toning, whilst increasing your turnout, flexibility and elasticity. It is a great complement to Ballet training.
    (NEW only on Thursday)

  • Stretching: Ballet stretching is essential for improving flexibility and achieving the graceful lines required in dance. According to modern methods, it will be pleasant and interesting.

  • Adagio: A slower exercise, focusing on strength and control, it often involves lifting your legs off the ground. It has a graceful and fluid quality which requires core strength and balance (Intermediate)

  • Petit Allegro: these are small jumps focusing on elevation and faster footwork (Intermediate)

  • Grand Allegro: bigger jumps, typically incorporates harder moves and travels across the studio (Advanced)

  • Exercise on Pointe: Exercising on pointe involves precise movements that build strength, balance, and control while dancing on the tips of the toes (Advanced)

Andrea

I hadn’t been to a ballet lesson for over 17 years so I thought I would try Kateryna’s. She is very patient and supportive giving tips and clear demonstrations to help me to improve each week. I really appreciate the Whattsapp group for the in between lesson times and the other ladies in the group are very friendly too. I would highly recommend Kateryna’s classes.

Amanda

I was a bit nervous, as I hadn’t danced for many years. However, everyone was really friendly and Kateryna made the class very enjoyable. Kateryna’s guidance is second to none and I have learnt loads already. I would highly recommend!

Joanne

The best dance class I've ever attended. Enjoyable and stretching. You improve instantly after Kateryna's teaching.

Uniform Tips

Ballet is a visual art, but it's all about the body and sensations. A ballet uniform is essential for effective practice and truly experiencing this art form. If you've decided to take up ballet, be prepared not only mentally but also in terms of attire.

Below are some tips, along with links to stores where you can purchase these items (not an advertisement). You can find them in any store that suits you; these are just some ready options.

Shoes

The most important piece of clothing! Pointe shoes will come later, but for now, you’ll need soft ballet shoes.

Tights

It's better to go for professional ones, in a nude color. They will help your legs work effectively.

Leotard

Simple, black is better, without any mesh or colors.

Skirt

It can come in different styles. Choose a minimal black one that you like. Accentuate your hips, add some inspiration.

Shorts or Pants

These can also be short shorts or pants. However, it's better if they are specifically designed for ballet.

Ballet Hairstyle

This is simple ballet bunch. But if you have short hair, just pin it back so it doesn’t get in the way or fall on your face while moving.
